Description

Leaves: Leaves compound. Alternate. Leaflets broadly elliptic to broadly obovate or suborbicular, 7–12 cm long, 6–11.3 cm wide. Apex rounded to truncate. Base truncate to very broadly cuneate. Upper surfaces moderately appressed silky pubescent, lower surface densely so; leaflets coriaceous. Leaflet margins entire. Petiolate. Stipules small, caducous; Leaflet stipels minute.

Flowers: Flowers usually 6–14 in axillary pseudoracemes up to 10 cm long. Flowers papilionaceous; bracteoles present, caducous. Calyx 15–16 mm long, sparsely appressed pubescent, upper edge constricted just behind apex, upper lip 9–11 mm long, the 2 lobes connate along upper edge except in the distal 3.5–5 mm, lowest lobe subulate, ca. 2.5 mm long. Calyx bilabiate, 5-lobed, the upper lip large and with 2 lobes connate along the upper margin, the lower lip trifid. Corolla dark pink, standard with a white spot at base, 35–42 mm long, wing petals 30–34 mm long, keel petals 32–36 mm long. Stamens 10; upper stamen distinct at base, loosely adhering to the other 9 up to middle, the other 9 connate into a tube. Ovary superior, stipitate; ovules 5–20; style incurved, glabrous; stigma small, terminal.

Fruit: Pods compressed; 10–17 cm long; 2.5–3 cm wide; with a longitudinal sutural ridge and an additional longitudinal ridge 5–6 mm below the upper suture. Seeds dark brown; buoyant; ellipsoid; moderately compressed; 16–19 mm long; 10–12 mm wide; the hilum 9–12 mm long. Seeds transversely arranged; ellipsoid; hilum elongated; oblong; with a small; papery; persistent rim–aril.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Naturalized on beaches or slightly inland.

Elevation Range: 0–140 m.
